Ever wondered how those awesome card game illustrations can be understood so clearly—even when shrunk down to tiny icons?
In this two-day workshop, card art expert Alexandre Leoni will reveal how he turns up readability to the max. Leoni has worked extensively in the card game industry, creating art for iconic franchises such as Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering, KeyForge, and Lightseekers. Now, he’s ready to reveal all his secrets.
During this live online class, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, get guidance, and even receive a paintover of your art (seats limited!). Find out what studios are looking for, and learn card game industry techniques directly from a professional artist 💪

Workshop Structure
Timings
- The workshop will take place over two days, on June 6th 2025 and June 9th 2025.
- Each day will consist of two 2.5-hour sessions, with a 45-minute break in between.
- The days will run from 2pm-7:45pm GMT. Please ensure you can attend the workshop in your timezone before booking.
Day 1
- Session 1: Leoni will talk about card art briefs, and reveal the composition and decision-making process behind several thumbnail options. He will also discuss what studios are looking for, and share real-life feedback he has received on card art projects.
- 45-minute break
- Session 2: Leoni will choose one thumbnail and get to work, whilst explaining his process and taking questions.
- Students will receive a card art brief as a homework assignment at the end of the day. Gold Ticket students must complete their art before Day 2. For Silver Ticket students, the brief is optional.
Day 2
- Session 1: Leoni will continue rendering the final artwork, whilst explaining his process and taking questions. He’ll get as close to a finished product as possible before the break.
- 45-minute break
- Session 2: Leoni will give feedback and paintovers on the Gold Ticket students’ assignments, whilst taking questions.

Gold Ticket & Silver Ticket- What You’ll Get

How It Works
- Choose between a Gold Ticket or Silver Ticket seat in the workshop (see above), and book a spot—hurry, seats are limited!
- Before each day of the workshop takes place, you’ll receive a private link to enter the virtual classroom.
- During the workshop, you’ll be able to freely ask questions in the chat. A moderator will pass questions to Leoni whilst he works.
- At the end of Day 1, students will receive a brief to create their own card art (optional for Silver Ticket).
- Gold Ticket students must submit their art before Day 2. This artwork can be taken as far as you like - but the more polished it is, the more detailed feedback you’ll get.
- In the second session of Day 2, Leoni will conduct paintovers on the Gold Ticket students’ art. All students can watch and ask questions.
- After each session, all students will receive a link to download the video recording.
Requirements
To attend this workshop, you should have solid drawing skills and a basic grasp of art fundamentals. This workshop will discuss digital art techniques, so an understanding of painting software (such as Photoshop, Procreate or Clip Studio Paint) is also essential.

Alexandre Leoni (@leoniarte) is one of Mooncolony’s Lead Artists and a famed rendering wizard 🧙♂️ During his career, Leoni has become a notable figure within Brazil’s creative community, well-known for his colorful stylized work. He has over 15 years of experience in game illustration—particularly card games—and has worked on iconic franchises such as Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering, KeyForge, and Lightseekers. Leoni is also a Lead Artist on Mooncolony’s 2.5D animated cinematics. Alongside his work at Mooncolony, Leoni is passionate about helping budding game artists achieve success.
